Cabinets Shaping Up

Cabinetry work continued today. It seems that cabinet installation is one of those jobs that require a lot of patience and attention to details. It takes a lot of detailed work to make sure everything that we expect to be laid out in a straight line really is in a straight line.

Probably the most noticeable change today was the addition of some decorative structure to the tops of the upper cabinets in the kitchen.

This crown on the cabinets looks bigger than we expected. It’s funny, because as I look at the design drawings, that’s what I see. Maybe it just looks bigger in person, or maybe it’s just that we’re not used to it. A redesign is, pretty much by definition, going to change the way things look, so it seems that being startled by things we’re not used to is something we’re going to have to get used to. 😉

The thing that is different about the crown from what I saw in the drawings is that a corner of it extends from the kitchen through the archway at the place where the refrigerator is going to be, but I understand why that has happened. The wall next to the refrigerator had to be cut back in order to let the refrigerator door fully open, and that leaves the crown extending beyond. I don’t know that I can think of a better way they could have handled that. Also, I think it may blend in better and not stand out when other elements come together in the kitchen. For one thing, the pantry hasn’t gotten its crown yet, which I think is because the cabinet that’s supposed to be attached to its side has not been installed yet.

Something cool they showed me today was a special cabinet feature that lets us easily reach things that around one of the corners in our cabinets. It’s hard to describe, so I’ll just show you.

It’s really slick the way these shelves slide out and back in.

I noticed a chip out of the lower corner of one of the cabinet doors. We have a meeting set for Monday afternoon with our project manager, so I should add that to the list of things to discuss.

One more minor thing is that they added molding to the bottom of the bathroom vanity.
